In this Alumni Master Class, Jo Metcalf will invite you to engage in a critical discussion of Martin Luther King's "Letter from a Birmingham Jail and the Powers of Persuasion" (1963). In this Letter, much like in his speeches, King's mission was to persuade the American people, and ultimately the US federal government, that segregation between the races was inhumane and illegal. But in this particular case, can we argue that his incarceration served as a particular form of inspiration? Was his Letter even more compelling because of his imprisoned status? Where possible, please try to read a copy of the letter in advance of the class. It can be accessed here: https://www.africa.upenn.edu/Articles_Gen/Letter_Birmingham.html#:~:text=My%20Dear%20Fellow%20Clergymen%3A,of%20my%20work%20and%20ideas.
